Internet in Thailand - what to expect

Your networks in Thailand

  • TrueMove H
  • dtac (True) - Since the True merger - a combined network covering ~93% of the population

5G is extensive in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, and the islands and rural areas run on strong 4G.

Where reception gets weak

  • On Koh Phangan the west-coast beaches are well covered - the northeast coast and jungle interior bounce between 3G and nothing
  • Koh Tao has 4G at Sairee and Mae Haad; the eastern bays (Shark Bay, Tanote) drop to 3G
  • On inter-island ferries the signal disappears 2-3 km offshore and returns on approach - completely normal
  • National parks (Khao Sok) have signal at the entrances and hubs - not deep in the jungle

Free Wi-Fi - the honest picture

Free Wi-Fi at nearly every hotel, guesthouse and cafe, even budget ones. Fast and reliable in Bangkok and the big cities; slow and crowded in the evenings on remote islands.

On landing

Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK) and Phuket (HKT) have free Wi-Fi after a quick signup. The eSIM skips the SIM booths - you're online on the way to immigration.

How much data do you actually need?

What a day of typical use adds up to - so you pick the right plan, not the biggest one.

WhatsApp & messages ~50 MB / day
Maps & navigation ~50-100 MB / day
Social & browsing ~300-500 MB / day
Video & streaming ~1 GB / hour
3GB Light / short trip

Messages, maps and a bit of browsing over a long weekend.

Most popular 5GB A regular week abroad

Daily navigation, social, photos and calls - the typical week's fit.

10GB Long trip / heavy use

Two weeks, or daily streaming, video calls and hotspot.

20GB Working remotely

Video meetings, uploads and tethering a laptop for weeks.

On Wi-Fi at the hotel? It doesn't touch your plan. And if you run low, topping up on the site takes a minute.

The moment, shared live No hunting for Wi-Fi, no airport SIM booths - you're online from the second you land.

Yes. Your own number stays in the phone and isn't lost. The eSIM provides data only, and browsing runs through it - no roaming charges. For calls and messages you can use WhatsApp and similar apps over the eSIM's data. During the trip you can switch the Israeli line off entirely - the number is not lost, and you switch it back on when you land in Israel.

Yes, installing needs Wi-Fi - which is why you install at home before the flight. Activating on landing needs nothing beyond switching the line on in Settings.

Buy another plan on the site within minutes, from anywhere. Your personal order page shows how much data is left at any time.

As long as the eSIM hasn't been activated at the destination - cancel for a refund per our terms. After the first connection the plan is considered fully delivered.

Yes - the eSIM rides on TrueMove H and dtac. The main beach areas get fast 4G; remote corners and the jungle interior weaken, and ferries lose signal in open water.

For a trip continuing to Vietnam, Japan or India there's one Asia plan covering 20 countries - a single eSIM for the whole route.
