Technical details
Internet in United Arab Emirates - what to expect
cell_towerYour networks in United Arab Emirates
- du - Strong coverage across the city cores, Dubai and Abu Dhabi included
5G is widely deployed on both networks across all seven emirates, with some of the world's fastest speeds in central Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
signal_cellular_connected_no_internet_4_barWhere reception gets weak
- In remote desert areas and the Hajar mountains (e.g. the road to Jebel Jais) reception is less consistent than in the cities
- Within Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the major cities - full, strong coverage almost everywhere
wifiFree Wi-Fi - the honest picture
Dubai runs one of the world's largest public Wi-Fi networks - tens of thousands of hotspots in malls, the Metro and public buildings. Registration with a phone number is usually required, and sessions are time-limited.
flight_landOn landing
DXB and AUH both have free Wi-Fi throughout the terminals. Install the eSIM at home before the flight - on landing you just switch the line on.
phone_disabledCalls and VoIP - important here
WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are blocked in the UAE under the local regulator's (TDRA) policy. The block is enforced at network level - it applies to every network in the country, across all seven emirates, on any SIM or eSIM including ours, with no free-zone or Wi-Fi exception. WhatsApp messages, photos, voice notes and files work normally. For calls: the licensed BOTIM (free since 2024), C'Me or ToTok - and Zoom and Microsoft Teams work unrestricted too.
How much data do you actually need?
What a day of typical use adds up to - so you pick the right plan, not the biggest one.
Messages, maps and a bit of browsing over a long weekend.
Daily navigation, social, photos and calls - the typical week's fit.
Two weeks, or daily streaming, video calls and hotspot.
Video meetings, uploads and tethering a laptop for weeks.
lightbulbOn Wi-Fi at the hotel? It doesn't touch your plan. And if you run low, topping up on the site takes a minute.

The clock starts only on the first connection to a network in United Arab Emirates - not at purchase and not at install. Install at home; the days count only from landing.

Yes. Your own number stays in the phone and isn't lost. The eSIM provides data only, and browsing runs through it - no roaming charges. WhatsApp messages work as usual, but voice calls in apps are restricted in United Arab Emirates - see the calls note on this page. During the trip you can switch the Israeli line off entirely - the number is not lost, and you switch it back on when you land in Israel.
Yes, installing needs Wi-Fi - which is why you install at home before the flight. Activating on landing needs nothing beyond switching the line on in Settings.
Buy another plan on the site within minutes, from anywhere. Your personal order page shows how much data is left at any time.
As long as the eSIM hasn't been activated at the destination - cancel for a refund per our terms. After the first connection the plan is considered fully delivered.
Messages, photos, voice notes and files - yes, as usual. WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are blocked across all seven emirates. The block is enforced at network level so it applies to every SIM and eSIM, ours included - no plan on the market bypasses it. For calls: BOTIM (free), ToTok, and Zoom and Teams which work normally.
No, there is no such requirement. A foreign eSIM is legal and runs on the local networks exactly like a local SIM. The rumour comes from the local carriers handing out a free tourist card at the airport - a marketing giveaway, not a requirement, and it lasts about a day. What is true: a local physical SIM requires in-store passport registration, and an eSIM skips that.
